(Tuesday, May 30th,Waldorf) The second-year Blue Crab, Michael Wielansky, had his contract purchased today by the MLB's San Francisco Giants. Until his contract was purchased, Wielansky led the Blue Crabs in home runs with eight and had a slash of .320/.400/.660 with a whopping 1.060 OPS.
Wielansky was drafted by the Houston Astros coming out of the College of Wooster, as he became the first Division three position player to be selected in the MLB draft. The St. Louis native was with the Astros organization for four years.
He was signed by the Long Island Ducks, and after a few months, he was traded to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. He instantly left an impact when he starred in 24 games, had a .365 batting average, and hit four home runs in June.
After the 2022 season, Michael Wielansky participated in this year's World Baseball Classic, joining team Israel and even starting the final game at Loan Depot Park in Miami, Florida. Wielansky singled twice against Marlins starter Jesus Luzardo.
Now, the 26-year-old will return to the minor leagues after getting signed by the San Francisco Giants. The last Blue Crab to be picked up by a Major League team was Endrys Briceno, who was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"We are really excited for Mike; when he came to Southern Maryland, we knew he was talented, and he really proved himself." Stan Cliburn said. "Congratulations to Mike, and good luck on the next steps of his career."
