Crabs Split Pivotal Twinbill
Waldorf, MD – Southern Maryland, fresh off of a rest day on Tuesday thanks to a rainout, headed to PeoplesBank Ballpark for a doubleheader with the York Revolution on Wednesday evening. After taking game one in decisive fashion, 6-1, game two went to the Revs, 5-0 making tomorrow’s series finale all the more important. The Revs had seven hits in each game, the difference was the Blue Crabs dozen in game one was followed by just three hits in game two.
Tommy Thorpe tossed a terrific near five innings in game one, and allowed the bullpen to shut the door. The pitching staff, including Adam Choplick (W, 1-2) who got out of a critical jam in the fifth quelled the hottest bats in the Atlantic League, holding them to just one run in the contest.
The Blue Crabs bats in the meantime were exploding. Charlie Valerio kicked it off in the second with a solo homer, and Tony Thomas knocked in another run in the third before Cory Vaughn sent his 19th home run of the season to center field making it a 4-0 lead. Southern Maryland never looked back, and took the first of two on the day by a score of 6-1.
Dusten Knight got the start in the second game, and didn’t allow a single hit through 2.2 innings when suddenly the York bats came alive. They put six straight baserunners aboard including five hits and four runs, sparked by a two run shot from Wellington Dotel.
The quartet in the fourth was all the Revs needed to end the day on an even note, as the squads would split the double header after a York 5-0 victory in game two. Southern Maryland entered the day three games back of the Revolution and exited the same way, but tomorrow’s finale could pay major dividends to both of the teams’ seasons.
The Blue Crabs will return home Friday August 30th for the series opener of a four game set with the York Revolution, with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch with game two of a double header to follow.
