Monuments Drop a Heart-Breaker
Waldorf, MD – Following an offensive explosion in a series opening game between the Southern Maryland Monuments and the York Revolution in which there were 40 combined hits and 30 combined runs, the bats cooled off a bit in game two. It was a pitcher’s duel in the second of three games of the series that saw just seven total runs, and ended in a 4-3 Revs victory.
The Monuments got on the board early as Dean Green had his second RBI single in as many nights, giving him one in each of his first two games after being signed by the ball club on Tuesday afternoon. Green’s single scored the speedy Kent Blackstone, putting the good guys in the scoring column first, and giving them a 1-0 advantage in the early going on the York starter, Duke von Schamann (W, 3-2).
Michael Kelly (L, 3-5) got the start for the ‘Mons this evening, and he was on the mark early and often. He set a 2019 team best in the strikeouts category with ten, and allowed just five hits through as many innings of work. The first trouble that he ran into was in the top of the third inning. York scored pair of runs coming on a Telvin Nash RBI single followed by a Ryan Dent sacrifice fly later in the frame to give the Revolution their first lead of the contest, at a count of 2-1.
After a silent fourth inning of play from both sides, York tacked on one more in the fifth as Isaias Tejeda lined a home run on to the picnic deck area atop the left field fence, marking the first long ball on the season for the first baseman. The Revs added one more in the seventh off of the Southern Maryland southpaw reliever, Adam Choplick, putting York ahead by a score of 4-1.
The ‘Ments bats came alive once again in the bottom of the eighth inning. It began with a leadoff hot shot line drive double down the left field line from Cory Vaughn. The lightning fast Vaughn was driven in by the very next Blue Crab to come up to the plate, Charlie Valerio. After Frank Martinez moved Valerio to third base on a ground out, Tony Thomas brought Valerio home to make it a one run contest through eight innings of play, with the Revs clinging on to a 4-3 lead.
Jameson McGrane (S, 4) came in to pitch for York in the bottom of the ninth inning and shut down the Blue Crabs bats. York’s 4-3 victory this evening trimmed their deficit in the Freedom Division to just one and a half games, as they continue to fight for a historic season turn around.
The Blue Crabs return to Regency Furniture Stadium tomorrow, July 4th, for a 6:35 start time, with a fireworks extravaganza to follow.
