Blue Crabs Win 8-7 Thanks to Ninth Inning Rally New Britain, CT
The Blue Crabs rallied in the top of the ninth inning to win the rubber match of a three-game set with the New Britain Bees by a final score of 8-7. Tonight’s win secures the series win for a red-hot Southern Maryland squad that has won three out of their last four series, marking their first three series wins of the season. The Blue Crabs started the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Rubi Silva launched a solo home run to put the Blue Crabs ahead 1-0. But the Bees responded when Alexi Martinez led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run. Southern Maryland continued to produce in the top of the second inning. With Cory Vaughn leading off of second base, Frank Martinez drove a single into right field, scoring Vaughn. Tony Thomas kept the offense going to extend the Blue Crabs’ lead with a sac fly giving Southern Maryland a 3-1 advantage. In the top of the third inning, Joe Benson lined a one-out double over the head of New Britain center-fielder Alejandro De Aza. Two batters later, Vaughn smashed an opposite field home run, giving the Blue Crabs a four-run lead. New Britain slowly chipped away that the Blue Crabs’ 5-1 edge. By the bottom of the eighth inning, the Bees trailed 6-4 and James Dykstra (W, 2-1) entered the game. With a runner on first base, Alexi Amarista hammered his second home run of the game to tie the scoring at six. The Bees jumped on top later in the inning when Taylor Motter drove in the go-ahead run, putting the Bees ahead 7-6. In the top of the ninth inning, Michael Johnson (L, 0-2) took the mound for the Bees. Johnson allowed a pair of base hits, but struck out Tony Thomas, and Southern Maryland was down to their final out. After a walk issued to Edwin Garcia, Josh McAdams drove a line drive that deflected off of third base and into left field, scoring two runs and giving the Blue Crabs an 8-7 advantage. Southern Maryland turned to Mat Latos in the bottom of the ninth inning. After walking the leadoff hitter, Latos (S, 7) set the Bees down in order to give the Blue Crabs an 8-7 win. The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, June 21th for the first game of six-game homestand that will begin against the High Point Rockers with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
