The good guys jumped on top early when Rubi Silva doubled in the right-center alley to score Mike Falsetti in the bottom of third first inning, tacking on the first run of the contest. Southern Maryland’s offense continued to be in attack mode, plating a run in each of the following innings. Mike Falsetti kept the scoring going with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Frank Martinez followed in the fifth inning with an RBI double to score Rubi Silva.Ryan Chaffee (W, 1-4) came in relief for Brandon Cumpton after he tossed a magnificent six innings on the mound.
Chaffee pitched just one inning of work, and allowed a pair of runs from a two-run home run to left field off of the bat of Tyler Ladendorf. With a ballgame tied at three a piece heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Blue Crabs bats proved valiant, as Cory Vaughn smacked an RBI triple to right field off of his former teammate, Sam Runion (L, 1-2) to put Southern Maryland ahead by a single run.In the heaviest of rain, Tommy Thorpe (S,1) came in relief for Kevin Munson in the top of the eighth inning with two runners on and no outs. Thorpe persevered in his first appearance in over two weeks, as he would induce a double play, and follow it with a strikeout one batter later to close the door on seven and a half innings of baseball.
In the middle of the eighth inning, the skies opened up and tremendous amounts of rain fell upon Regency Furniture Stadium, so much so that the game would never come to finish, as the Mother Nature became the deciding factor in a 4-3 Blue Crabs victory over High Point.
The Blue Crabs will return home Friday, June 7th for the final game of the homestand, and it’ll be Girl Scout Night/Sleepover and Glow in the Park Night at Regency Furniture Stadium, with the first pitch at 6:35 PM.
