(Bridgewater, NJ., Jul. 25, 2018) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-8) lost game two of a doubleheader against the Somerset Patriots (13-3) 7-1, splitting the day at one game each.
Somerset jumped on the board early, putting up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Craig Massey led off with a walk, going first-to-third on a single from Justin Pacchioli. Pacchioli stole second to put two in scoring position with nobody out in the inning. Alfredo Rodriguez came up with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Massey to open the scoring on the night. Nate Coronado singled behind that, scoring Pacchioli to grab an early 2-0 lead.
Brett Marshall (2-3) recovered nicely, as him and David Kubiak (7-1) traded scoreless second and third innings. The Blue Crabs got on the board in the top of the fourth, putting one up in the inning. Teodoro Martinez led off with a double, before back-to-back strikeouts put two away for Kubiak. Angelys Nina came through with a two-out single, bringing home Martinez to cut the deficit to one run.
The Patriots offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth, putting up five runs in the fifth. Marshall walked the first two batters, with a wild pitch moving both in to scoring position. Rodriguez followed that with a single, bringing home both runners. After a groundout moved Rodriguez to third, he came home on the third wild pitch of the inning. Endy Chavez walked to extend the inning, before a two-run homerun from Matt Oberste put Somerset ahead 7-1.
Kubiak continued on strong for the Patriots, working a scoreless sixth to send the six-run game in to the seventh. The right-hander returned to the mound for the seventh, looking for his first complete game of the year. He allowed a double to Devon Rodriguez to start the frame, before retiring the next three batters in order to finish off the 7-1 win.
The Blue Crabs return to action Thursday, July 26th for the series finale against the Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. on Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark.
