BC take Series
(Waldorf, MD., Jun. 17, 2018) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-27) won the series finale against the York Revolution (22-23) 11-6, rallying for 10 runs off the Revolution bullpen late in the game.
Pitching had the upper hand early once again, as the both starters traded scoreless innings through the first two. The Revolution broke through in the top of third, scoring two off Drake Britton in the inning. Tyler Clark led off the inning with a triple, with a hit-by-pitch putting runners on the corners with nobody and the top of the Revs lineup coming up. Jared Mitchell hit a flyball to left field, deep enough to get Clark across and get credited for a sacrifice fly. Tyson Gillies moved to second on the sacrifice fly, with an error allowing him to reach third. Another sacrifice fly ensued, as Welington Dotel allowed Gillies to come across to take a 2-0 lead.
Dominic Severino allowed just two hits through his first three innings, shutting down the Blue Crabs offense early in the game. A solo homerun off the bat of Jon Griffin got Southern Maryland on the board in the fourth. The York offense responded to the homerun by opening up the game in the fifth, tallying four runs in the inning.
Clark got is started once again, leading off with a single. Britton attempted a pickoff at first, but the ball escaped and Clark was able to circle all the way to third, setting up a sacrifice fly from Gillies for the first run in the inning. A walk followed, before a popout brought the inning within an out of finishing. Back-to-back singles followed, with Zach Wilson scoring Mitchell on the second. Jose Cuevas kept the line moving with a double to score Dotel, followed by a fourth straight hit to score Wilson and put the score up to 6-1.
The Blue Crabs continued to battle in the game, as they put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Two singles started the inning, before reliever Tyler Cravy got a groundball to first for the first out in the inning. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, with a wild pitch in the next at-bat allowing Frank Martinez to score from third. Just two pitches later, Cory Vaughn crushed a three-run blast well over the left field wall to clear the bases. Vaughn’s seventh homerun of the season cut the deficit to one run, with the score sitting at 6-5 heading to the seventh.
The offense kept rolling in the bottom of the seventh, as they exploded for seven more runs in the inning. Back-to-back singles started the frame, with a Martinez double scoring Ryan Strausborger to tie the game. A walk to Jon Griffin loaded the bases, setting up a two-RBI single from Angelo Songco to give the Blue Crabs their first lead of the day. A double from Devon Rodriguez was next, scoring Griffin before a passed ball allowed Songco to add another to the tally. Cory Vaughn followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rodriguez, the final of the six runs in the inning and giving Southern Maryland an 11-6 lead.
The Blue Crabs bullpen continued to shut down the Revolution offense, as Sam Runion struck out the side in order in the eighth inning. Ryan Chaffee took over in the ninth, and worked a scoreless frame to secure the 11-6 win in the finale. On the day, four relievers for the Blue Crabs combined to allowed just one hit in 4.1 scoreless innings.
The Blue Crabs return to action Tuesday, June 19th for the road series opener against the New Britain Bees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Tuesday at New Britain Stadium.
