Teeter Totter Game Tilts in Favor of Sugar Land
Waldorf, MD – After snagging back-to-back wins following a loss in the series opener, the Blue Crabs came into today seeking the series win over the Sugar Land Skeeters. A teeter totter contest ensued but Sugar Land landed on top, winning by a final count of 8-6.
The Blue Crabs gave the ball to the left-hander Tommy Thorpe (L, 2-5) this evening and he struggled out of the gates. After the speedy Rico Noel reached on a bunt single, Jason Martinson followed with a two run homer. The first two Skeeter batters scored, but the next three were set down in order.
The Skeeters sent Mike Hauschild (W, 3-0) to the hill. The MLB veteran saw Josh McAdams reach on a one out error, and Southern Maryland took full advantage of the mistake. After a strikeout, Rubi Silva sent a monstrous two run homer over the BurchOil mini monster, and Edwin Garcia and Joe Benson each plated a run to give the good guys a 4-2 advantage through two innings of play.
The scoring continued to pour on in the early going when the Skeeters plated a trio in their half of the third as D.J. Peterson and Juan Silverio each came through with RBI doubles before Albert Cordero gave Sugar Land the lead on a sacrifice fly.
The craziness continued when Ryan Chaffee loaded the bases with no outs, but Adam Choplick came in and allowed just one of those inherited runners to score in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Tony Thomas reached on a fielder’s choice. He later stole second and third base, and an errant throw down to third brought him home to make it a one run game, 7-6 Skeeters.
Sugar Land plated one more in the top of ninth, and the MLB veteran Nick Rumbelow (S, 7) came in in the bottom of the frame to close the book on an 8-6 back and forth Skeeters victory.
The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, Friday August 16th for the series opener of a three game set with the Somerset Patriots with a 6:35 p.m first pitch.
