Rockers Top Blue Crabs in Series Finale
High Point, NC – The Blue Crabs came into the game against High Point looking even up the series before returning home to Regency Furniture Stadium. But Southern Maryland struggled to drive in runs on Thursday evening, and ultimately fell 4-1 to the Rockers.
In the top of the third inning, the Blue Crabs’ offense clicked. With two outs and the base paths empty, Kent Blackstone reached on a hit by pitch. The next batter, Edwin Garcia, roped a double into the left-center field gap, scoring Blackstone and giving the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead. High Point’s starter, Dominic DeMasi (W, 5-2), settled down from there, pitching six and two-thirds innings while allowing just the one run.
After two strong innings from Southern Maryland’s starter Dusten Knight (L, 0-2), the Rockers’ bats produced in the bottom of the third. Following a leadoff single from Giovanny Alfonzo, Steven Cardullo hit an automatic double to left field, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Both runners came around to score in the inning, giving High Point a 2-1 edge.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rockers struck again. Alfonzo led off the inning again for High Point and bounced a single into left field. Cardullo then launched a two-run home run over the wall in left, extending the Rockers' lead to 4-1.
Both bullpens pitched very well in tonight’s game. John Hayes threw two scoreless innings for Southern Maryland. Following DeMasi’s strong performance, Chase Huchingson pitched a scoreless inning and a third for the Rockers.
Ryan Kelly (S, 4) came in for High Point in the top of the ninth inning. Kelly allowed a two-out single, but escaped the inning unscathed, giving the Rockers a 4-1 win. While Southern Maryland posted nine hits and three walks, they mustered only a single run.
The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, Friday August 2nd for the series opener of a three game set with the Somerset Patriots, and a 6:35 p.m first pitch.
