Blue Crabs Drop Pivotal Game Three
Waldorf, MD – Southern Maryland walked into game three of an even series tied for third place in the Freedom Division with the Lancaster Barnstormers. The first half of Sunday afternoon’s contest showed signs of a barnburner, but the Barnstormers opened up the scoring towards the latter stages of the game to take a decisive series finale by a final score of 10-3.
The bats were not shy for either side in the early going, and the Blue Crabs had the first say as they would strike in the top of the first inning. Joe Benson grounded out to the Lancaster third baseman, Joey Terdoslavich, but a throwing error brought home Rubi Silva to put the good guys up early.
In the bottom of the second inning, the ‘Stormers matched the Blue Crabs run tally as a Devon Torrence sacrifice fly got the job done to bring home K.C. Hobson, tying the scoring at 1-1.
In the very next half inning of play, Southern Maryland put the first crooked number on the scoreboard. Jon Griffin started it off, as he singled to left field and brought the speedy Kent Blackstone home in the process. Cory Vaughn kept it going as he matched Griffin with an RBI single to left field of his own, and just like that the Barnstormers starter, Jared Lakind, (W, 3-2) found his squad trailing by a score of 3-1.
Lancaster came back with a vengeance in the bottom of the third against the Southern Maryland starter, Tommy Thorpe (L, 0-2). Both Hobson and Anderson De La Rosa found themselves with RBI’s once the half inning was said and done, and the score was 3-3.
Following an offensive attack in the first few innings from the Blue Crabs’ bats, they fell silent as the game went on. Lancaster, on the other hand, kept on at a torrid pace. The would score at least one run in each of the next five innings of the contest, giving them a healthy 10-3 lead. That score would stand for the duration of the ballgame, leaving Southern Maryland with a must win series starting on July 2nd with the York Revolution.
The Blue Crabs will return home July 2nd, for the series opener of a three-game set against the York Revolution in the Monumental Fun Series, with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
