Blue Crabs Win a Thriller
Waldorf, MD – Southern Maryland walked in to game two of a pivotal series with the Lancaster Barnstormers knowing two things for certain. It was not too late to turn this series around, and that their ace, Daryl Thompson (W, 5-4) was headed to the bump. The game would come down to the wire, and end in a 3-2 Blue Crabsvictory.
The scoring started in the bottom of the second inning on Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Barnstormers’ K.C. Hobson doubled to right field and a throwing error brought home the first run of the contest.
Thompson settled down nicely, and in addition to a trio of tremendous diving plays by his defense, the right-hander exited in the seventh inning having struck out eight, finding himself one shy of tying his former teammate, and longtime Blue Crab Gaby Hernandez for fourth in league history in strikeouts issued.
In the meantime, Southern Maryland’s offense got cooking. In the top of the fifth inning, the Blue Crabs offense finally cracked the code that was the ‘Stormers starter Kyle Davies (L, 4-5). Charlie Valerio stayed undeniably hot, as he would slap his second home run in the past week, and two innings later, in the top of the seventh, Southern Maryland got back to it. With runners on second and third base, Tony Thomas pounded a ground-rule double to score a pair, and put the Blue Crabs up 3-1.
Ryan Chaffee and Adam Choplick combined to work out of a jam, despite allowing one of Thompson’s runs to score, giving Daryl back-to-back starts with seven innings pitched and just one earned run.
The scoring calmed for the next few frames, and the Blue Crabs sent James Dykstra (S, 3) to the mound in the bottom of the ninth to shut the door as Southern Maryland tried to hold the score at a 3-2 lead. The Barnstormers put runners on the corners with no outs in the inning, and Dysktra put his game face on. With third place potentially on the line, the right-hander struck out Josh Bell, and induced a game ending double play to turn around a game in the balance, and secure a Southern Maryland victory.
The Blue Crabs will return home July 2nd, for the series opener of a three-game set against the York Revolution in the Monumental Fun Series, with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
