Waldorf, MD. – The Blue Crabs saw a game delayed nearly ninety minutes due to inclement weather, but came out on fire once the rain subsided. Up and down the batting order Southern Maryland sparked on the way to securing the team’s first series win of the season in a 10-0 blowout victory, doing so in just five innings due to rain against the Freedom Division leading Sugar Land Skeeters.
With Craig Stem (W,4-2) on the mound for the Blue Crabs, games tend to move fast. Sunday afternoon’s game was slow paced, but only when Southern Maryland was batting. The scoring outburst for the good guys began with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning, and the charge was led by Blue Crab veteran Edwin Garcia, who went two for three with a trio of RBI’s to his credit in the contest.
Southern Maryland tacked on three more runs in the following inning off the Skeeter starter, Roy Merritt (L, 2-2), as Frank Martinez, Tony Thomas, and Garcia each drove a run in giving Southern Maryland a 5-0 leading through three innings.
Not even the rain could tame the Blue Crabs’ red-hot bats in a blowout victory, as following another five combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Blue Crabs found themselves having plated a combined ten runs in innings two through five. The rain stopped the bleeding for the Skeeters as the game would be called in the bottom of the fifth, but the Blue Crabs statement had already been heard loud and clear as they won the series over Sugar Land with a 10-0 victory.
The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, June 10th for the series opening double header against the New Britain Bees, with game one kicking off at 5:00 p.m.
