(Waldorf, Md., Mar. 7, 2019) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced the signing of infielder Angelys Nina.
It was an interesting ride for Nina in 2018. He began the season with the New Britain Bees and posted a batting average of .140 through 13 games.
And then May 21st came.
On May 21st Nina was traded to the Blue Crabs, a change of scenery is all the second baseman needed. He began as a plug-in off the bench for Southern Maryland, but his scorching hot bat made it impossible to keep him out of the everyday lineup, so much so that sometimes, Angelys was in the outfield just so he could be in the batting order. As the season rolled on Nina’s bat exploded, he went off on a six-game tangent in which he went 16 for 31 at the plate, including a five for five game. He also strung together four consecutive multi-hit games on two separate occasions, and finished top 10 in the Atlantic League in batting average. Not too shabby for a guy that was hitting .140 at the beginning of the season.
Before Nina joined the Atlantic League, the Dominican Republic native spent nine seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization, where he reached as high as AAA. Nina thrived in his two full seasons at the AAA level, hitting .279 and .300 respectively. Unfortunately, Nina was in a log jam in the Rockies system, at the major league level Colorado had one of the most promising young infields in baseball blooming as Nina was working up the ranks. The electric infielder has been in the Atlantic League since 2016.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity to return to the Blue Crabs,” said Nina. “I’m so excited for this coming season, I've been working so hard this offseason because I believe we’re going to win it all this year.”
The team opens the 2019 season on May 3rd at home against the Lancaster Barnstormers. To save your seat at the ballpark for the upcoming season and other team news, visit www.somdbluecrabs.com or call 301-638-9788.
