(Central Islip, NY., Jun. 12, 2018) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (15-25) fell in the series opener against the Long Island Ducks (23-18) 7-2, with a five-run fifth inning providing the difference in the game.
After a scoreless first started the evening, Long Island got on the board with a run in each of the next two innings. David Washington got the scoring going in the bottom of the second, launching his seventh homerun of the season.
In the following inning, Jordany Valdespin tripled to put himself in scoring position with one out. Emilio Bonafacio followed that with a sacrifice fly, getting Valdespin across to give the Ducks an early 2-0 lead.
The Blue Crabs responded with a pair of runs, scoring one in the fourth and the fifth. Edwin Garcia started the inning with a single, moving up to second on a groundout to first. Angelo Songco doubled, easily scoring Garcia to cut the deficit to one.
Ryan Wagner started the fifth the same way, picking up a single for his first hit as a Blue Crab. A walk to Angelys Nina put two on with nobody out, before Bennett Parry (3-0) bounced back with two straight strikeouts. Teodoro Martinez came through for Southern Maryland with a two-out single, scoring Wagner to tie the game.
The Ducks opened things up in the bottom of the fifth, getting to Drake Britton (2-3) for five runs in the inning. Ramon Cabrera singled to start the inning, but was replaced at first by Cody Puckett on a fielder’s choice. A walk followed, before a single from Valdespin scored Puckett. Bonafacio added another sacrifice fly to score Dan Lyons. Valdespin moved to second on a wild pitch, scoring on a single from Travis Snider. Lew Ford capped everything off with a two-run homerun, giving Long Island a comfortable 7-2 lead.
Pitching took over from there, as Parry held tight to his five-run lead. The southpaw retired seven of the last eight batters he faced, exiting after seven innings of work. The Long Island bullpen picked up right where the starter left off, not allowing a hit over the final two innings. The 7-2 win for the Ducks extended their winning streak up to four games.
The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, June 12th for the second game against Ducks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Wednesday at Bethpage Ballpark.
